Query Companies House and the Charity Commission in plain English
Every company on the Companies House register and every charity on the Charity Commission register, with the accounts they have filed — queryable by typing a question. Ask for a figure and get the figure. Ask for a list and take it away as a CSV.
What it holds
From Companies House: 5.7 million companies, 36.6 million sets of filed accounts, and 15.3 million persons with significant control. From the Charity Commission: 404 000 charities, their trustees, income history and classifications. Plus auditors, audit fees and the figures parsed out of the accounts themselves.
How it answers
Your question becomes one SQL SELECT against the registers. The query is shown with every answer, so you can check what was actually asked of the data before you rely on the number.
What you get back
A single stated answer for a figure, or a previewed table with a CSV download for an extract — up to 100 000 rows, with the truncation written into the file if it is hit.
What it does not do
- It never writes. Every query runs inside a read-only Postgres transaction; inserts, updates and schema changes are refused by the database itself, not merely discouraged.
- It does not accept SQL. The download link carries a statement this service generated and signed — the query box is a question box, not a database console.
- It does not invent data. If the warehouse cannot answer a question, it says which information is missing rather than answering an easier question instead.
- It is not a substitute for the registers. Figures are as current as the last ingest, and a decision that turns on a single filing should be checked against the source.
